Laurie Brinklow

Laurie Brinklow (photo: Raymond Thériault)Laurie Brinklow (Charlottetown, PE) is a Prince Edward Island writer, editor, and book publisher. Originally from British Columbia, she moved to Prince Edward Island in 1983, and worked as Managing Editor at Ragweed Press from 1983 to 1990. She was Publishing Co-ordinator at the Institute of Island Studies from September 1990 to February 2004, when she became Publications Co-ordinator for UPEI, where she continues to work.

Laurie established The Acorn Press in 1993, with the mandate to produce books about Prince Edward Island by Prince Edward Islanders, in order to ensure that the province’s distinct island voices continue to be heard. Acorn has since published 35 books. The Press is a member of the Association of Canadian Publishers, the Literary Press Group, and the Atlantic Publishers Marketing Association.

Laurie is a poet, winning the Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia Poetry Prize in 1998, and was a runner-up in the League of Canadian Poets Annual Competition that same year. Her poetry has been published in various literary journals and anthologies. She is editor of Prince Edward Island: A Colourguide (Formac, 1999; updated 2001, 2003, 2005) and Prince Edward Island Memories (Travel Memories Press, 2002), and is the author of a poetry chapbook, Scars (Saturday Morning Chapbooks, 2005). She participated in CBC Radio’s Live Poets’ Society broadcast in 2001, and CBC’s Poetry Face-Off in 2006; and is a regular book panelist for CBC Radio’s afternoon program, MainStreet.

Laurie has served on boards of numerous Prince Edward Island arts organizations including the Great George Street Gallery, the PEI Council of the Arts, and the PEI Writers’ Guild.

Laurie has a BA in English from the University of Victoria, and an MA from the University of Prince Edward Island. She lives in Charlottetown with her two daughters. In her spare time she loves to sing.
